The Story behind the Song

As a writer, I’m a live wire fully immersed in the world around me, writing down and taking mental note of what I see, hear and feel. From the most mundane observations, to the more intriguing and the somewhat unusual. And so, “Me Without You” started in the kitchen in conversation with my British son-in-law Will, who mentioned the notion of a shower beer. You know, a guy jumping into the shower with shampoo in one hand, and a beer in the other? Hmm, nothing I’ve ever heard of, but it’s an interesting thought … so … I write it down. Fast forward to a few weeks later, and it’s me (Toronto) with my writing partner North Easton (Ottawa), and our artist in the room that day, singer-songwriter, recording artist, Andrew Allen (Vancouver) in a Skype writing session. The session begins with thoughts on song concepts and a few come up, along with my “hey guys, ever heard of a shower beer?” Nope, apparently not their thing. However, it sparks a conversation about what guys do when their girlfriends are away. And in we all jump with Iine after line spilling out, while North also builds the melody with Andrew and voila, “Me Without You”. Demo’d and sung by Andrew, born into the world is a sweet, heartfelt song that on a whim we enter into the UK Songwriting Competition - and win the Singer/Songwriter category. Fast forward to North and I in a first meeting with acclaimed Canadian Producer, Gavan Brown to talk about the prospect of writing with some of his artists, where we play “Me Without You”. Smiling, Gavan asks if we might be interested in the possibility of one of his newly signed artists “Havelin” taking on on the song? Ummm … YES?!! Enter Havelin and his team (with collaborating writers Mike Bilinki, Alex Zaichkowski, Gavan Brown), with a few changes made by the team to better align with Havelin’s vibe, and produced by Gavan.
3,500,000 streams later, here we are with a song inspired by a shower beer. Gotta love that. Check it out :)
