I recently had the pleasure or providing some insight behind my new single “Sorry I’m Late” to Brazil based - Revista Arte Brasileira. I was pleased to also include first hand perspective behind the production of the album and the song by Will Schollar, who is the Producer, Arranger and also played on all of the album tracks.

How was this song born?
The title song of my new album, “Sorry I’m Late”, was inspired by a time when a friend was going to make us late for a meeting – again. I joked that, given my history of being late, I could add a “sorry I'm late” notice to my email signature. That was the ah-ha moment of finding my album name. A title that perfectly summed up the experience of the songs on the album, and the fact that I had waited quite a while between my first album and this new album.
And so I wrote a song around that title. In true form of being sidelined by passion, I was heading to my studio one day with a full day ahead of me, coffee in hand, juggling my laptop and notebooks – but I stopped for a second at the piano because I had an idea for the music. Not wanting to get caught writing at that moment, I decided to stay at the piano instead of sitting down and played a few notes. Suddenly I could see the entire song in front of me… so I sat down. lol 4 hours later I looked it up with most of the music sketched out.
What is the main message?
How do you use the verses to show this? "Life is what happens when you're busy making plans." You can have all the goals you want for the future, but what won't change is that your life is lived moment by moment, day by day. Life unfolds in the here and now and often takes you where you didn't plan to go or you stay somewhere comfortably longer just because. As the chorus states – “Sorry I’m late – but there are 1000 things I had to do today, and another 1000 things I would love to pursue, that have to wait… sorry I’m late.”
Why did you decide on the sound/arrangement choices for the song? Answered by Will Schollar, Producer/Arranger/Multi-Instrumentalist.
I'm influenced by many different genres. Although I like retro sounds, I also love new sounds. My production style uses a mix of acoustic elements and modern syntheses.
This album features live elements throughout. I felt that capturing that early on in the process had a profound effect on the energy of the songs. Along with that, a wide variety of vintage analog gear was used in the recording and mixing, which brings the heat (something I'm a huge fan of). You can really tell when a recording is super digital, which isn't bad, but analog wins if you put them side by side. There are dynamics and other intricate elements that are embellished by analog gear.
Before starting the final recordings of Rosanne's album, I decided to spend a lot of time putting together the demos. I usually go for the key of a performance that adds the perfect element, and once I'm happy with my arrangement, I replace the bed tracks. While sometimes the demo version of a part fits and I can't get over it, "Sorry I'm Late" started with me and drummer Mark Kelso. This allowed us to add the desired power in the right places and from there I recorded parts with a mood that captured the feeling of the song.
I'm a guitarist first and foremost. Rosanne's project was inspiring in many ways. While I had complete mastery of creating atmospheric sounds that you would expect from a synthesizer or keyboard, I used my pedalboard to create interesting textures and tones instead. Using more experimental influences, I feel that this song, like the other songs on the album, leads to a movie soundscape that you could almost describe as cinematic.

Como nasceu essa música?
A música título do meu novo álbum, “Sorry I’m Late”, foi inspirada em um momento em que um amigo ia nos atrasar para uma reunião – mais uma vez. Eu brinquei que, dado o meu histórico de chegar atrasado, eu poderia acrescentar um aviso de “desculpe o atraso” na minha assinatura de e-mail. Esse foi o momento ah-ha de encontrar o nome do meu álbum. Um título que resumia perfeitamente a experiência das músicas do álbum, e o fato de eu ter esperado um bom tempo entre meu primeiro álbum e este novo álbum.
E então eu escrevi uma música em torno desse título. Na verdadeira forma de ser marginalizado pela paixão, eu estava indo para o meu estúdio um dia com um dia inteiro pela frente, café na mão, fazendo malabarismos com meu laptop e notebooks – mas parei por um segundo no piano porque eu tinha uma ideia para a música. Não querendo ser pego escrevendo naquele momento, decidi ficar ao piano ao invés de sentar e toquei algumas notas. De repente eu podia ver a música inteira na minha frente… então me sentei. Lol. 4 horas depois eu olhei para cima com a maior parte da música esboçada.
Qual é a mensagem principal? Como você utiliza os versos para mostrar isso?
“A vida é o que acontece quando você está ocupado fazendo planos”. Você pode ter todos os objetivos que quiser para o futuro, mas o que não vai mudar é que sua vida é vivida momento a momento, dia a dia. A vida se desenrola no aqui e agora e muitas vezes o leva para onde você não planejava ir ou você fica em algum lugar confortavelmente por mais tempo apenas porque. Como o refrão afirma – “Desculpe, estou atrasado – mas há 1000 coisas que eu tive que fazer hoje, e outras 1000 coisas que eu adoraria perseguir, que têm que esperar … desculpe, estou atrasado.”
Por que você decidiu as escolhas de som/arranjos para a música? Fiz esta pergunta a Will Schollar, meu produtor/arranjador/multi-instrumentista – e aqui está a resposta dele:
Eu sou influenciado por muitos gêneros diferentes. Embora eu goste de sons retrô, também adoro novos sons. Meu estilo de produção usa uma mistura de elementos acústicos e sínteses modernas. Este álbum apresenta elementos ao vivo por toda parte. Eu senti que capturar isso no início do processo teve um efeito profundo na energia das músicas. Junto com isso, uma grande variedade de equipamentos analógicos vintage foram usados na gravação e mixagem, o que traz o calor (algo que eu sou um grande fã). Você pode realmente dizer quando uma gravação é super digital, o que não é ruim, mas o analógico ganha se você os colocar lado a lado. Existem dinâmicas e outros elementos intrincados que são embelezados por equipamentos analógicos.
Antes de começar as gravações finais do álbum de Rosanne, decidi passar um bom tempo organizando as demos. Geralmente eu vou para o tom de uma performance que adiciona o elemento perfeito, e uma vez que estou feliz com meu arranjo, eu substituo as faixas da cama. Enquanto às vezes a versão demo de uma parte se encaixa e eu não consigo superá-la, “Sorry I’m Late”, começou comigo e com o baterista Mark Kelso. Isso nos permitiu adicionar o poder desejado nos lugares certos e, a partir daí, gravei partes com um clima que capturou o sentimento da música.
Eu sou um guitarrista em primeiro lugar. O projeto de Rosanne foi inspirador de muitas maneiras. Embora eu tivesse total domínio para criar sons atmosféricos que você esperaria de um sintetizador ou teclado, em vez disso, utilizei minha pedaleira para criar texturas e tons interessantes. Usando influências mais experimentais, sinto que essa música, assim como as outras músicas do álbum, leva a uma paisagem sonora de filme que você quase poderia descrever como cinematográfica.
